History Of Chameleons Montessori School

Our principal Emma Medell studied the Infants, Toddlers and Pre-School Montessori Courses at the Maria Montessori Training Organisation (AMI) in London and then gained 8 years practical experience as Principal at Beehive Montessori. In 1999 Emma began our Toddler's Group at Rainbow Montessori in Sonstraal, Durbanville.

Emma's sister Claire soon joined the team and Montessori Tinies, as it was called then was launched at Claires home in De Bron in April 2000. This was to become the foundation for the Chameleons Montessori School. Montessori Tinies comprised an infant & a toddlers group. Both groups flourished in the classroom and stunning garden that Zhu-Zhu created for the purpose. In 2003, a log cabin was built adjacent to the house and a small pre-school class was started.

The Toddlers Group remains a nurturing "home-from-home" environment for our "Tinies" in their log cabin in De Bron.

In 2003 the Veller Family offered us the opportunity to open a pre-school class on their picturesque Nitida Wine Farm. Very little persuasion was needed to make the decision to grow again, taking fullest advantage of the most unique environment on this renowned Cape wine farm. The opportunity was seized and an old labourers cottage on the farm was transformed into the home for the pre-school that is now the Butterfly Class - an ideal learning environment for our 3-6 year olds.

January 2006 saw the opening of the Junior Primary Class at Nitida, with growth over the next two years stimulated by Montessori Directress, Joanne Webster. This saw the building of a new log cabin alongside the existing Pre-School class on the wine farm, and saw additional expansion became a necessity in line with our admissions.

In January 2008, we moved into the new Primary School building situated in an expansive farm house on the Western side of the farm. The Primary School is thriving in the awesome new location and is becoming a well established private school.

The Pre-School is made up of two classes - The Butterfly Class & the new Ladybird Class. And both are amongst tall shady trees, on the Eastern side of the Nitida vineyards, overlooking the picturesque Durbanville Wine Valley.

From our humble beginnings our School has grown to accommodate approximately 80 children and a staff of 15 in three separate campuses each one continually striving to attain a more authentic understanding of Montessori.
